KK BARRETT (USA)
Production Designer
Production Designer
KK Barrett grew up in the plains of Nebraska and Oklahoma. Studied Art in college as a painter and sculptor. He then was involved in a music scene in Los Angeles and New York in 1977-79 as a Drummer in an avant-noise synth band, that led to his first Production Design challenge for “Population 1”, an underground film.
Self-taught as a film designer, he began just prior to the advent of MTV and used music videos and commercials, along with a few no budget horror films to learn by trial and glorious error.
After ten years of absence from feature films, during which he did graphic design, ran an un- derground hip hop club, played guitar in a chaos rock band, and did animation, and designed many Music Videos and Commercials, he returned to take film seriously with Spike Jonze on Being John Malkovich. Working on early films by Michel Gondry, Sofia Coppola, Charlie Kaufman and David O. Russell, there was a pattern of unique films outside of genre.
Working with Karen O. KK helped create “Stop The Virgens” as a live psycho opera that played in New York and Sydney, Australia. Working with Kid Koala, he directed a live silent film, NUFONIA MUST FALL, performed, scored, filmed and projected live before an audience at each performance that toured the world.
MTV awards for Smashing Pumpkins “Tonight Tonight” and Beck’s “New Pollution”.
